Kitab ("we", "us", "our") is a reading habit app for iOS that helps you track reading sessions, pages read, focus time, and streaks, and stay accountable with the help of Kit, your reading companion. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
Information We Collect
Kitab is designed to keep your reading data on your device. The information Kitab works with includes:
- Reading activity: books you're reading, reading sessions, pages read, time spent reading (focus time), and your reading streak. This data is stored locally on your device.
- App preferences: settings such as goals, reminders, and Screen Time / distraction-blocking preferences you configure within the app.
- Email address (optional): if you choose to join the beta or our mailing list from this website, we collect the email address you provide via our newsletter provider, Loops.
We do not require you to create an account to use Kitab's core features.
How We Use Your Information
- To provide core app functionality — tracking your reading sessions, pages, focus time, and streaks, and showing you your progress over time.
- To power Screen Time / distraction-blocking features you enable, using Apple's on-device frameworks.
- To send you occasional updates about Kitab if you've opted in via our email signup (e.g. beta invitations or launch announcements).
Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party service:
- Loops — to manage our email newsletter and beta signup list, if you provide your email address. See Loops' privacy policy for details.
- Apple frameworks (e.g. Screen Time API, on-device storage) — used solely to power in-app features, on your device.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
Data Retention
Reading activity stored on your device remains there until you delete the app or clear its data. If you sign up for our mailing list, your email address is retained until you unsubscribe or request deletion.
Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information. Since most Kitab data lives on your device, you can manage or delete it directly by adjusting in-app settings or deleting the app. To request removal from our mailing list or ask about any data we hold, contact us at hi@alvarosouza.com.
Children's Privacy
Kitab is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can remove it.
Security
We take reasonable measures to protect information processed by Kitab and our website. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of Kitab after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
